Towards a unique European power market: what is the role of the European Regional Initiatives?

Objectives and contents
In February 2006, the European regulators association (ERGEG) started the European Regional Initiatives (ERI), in order to promote national power market integration towards a single European market. This regional integration program will have a relevant impact on institutions and
market design. In 2007 there were news related to the mechanisms for solving cross-border congestions. In a medium term perspective, the impact on the member states should not relate only to the cross-border capacity allocation, but will directly affect national markets.
The purpose of the study is the integration of European electrical markets. Particular attention is devoted to three areas:
1) Analysis of the methods for allocation of transmission capacity;
2) Evaluation of the mechanisms adopted in Europe to ensure efficient integration of national markets in each of the macroregions identified by the association of European Regulators (ERGEG);
3) Estimate of recovery efficiency that can be achieved through the integration of the Italian electricity market with neighboring markets of the Central-south macrozone.
